At Atlantis we like to work with our clients closely and when possible save them money or time during their carpentry project. In this case the clients original design included a curved metal staircase, which when quoted placed the whole carpentry build over budget.
To overcome this obstacle we took the original architects drawings including the staircase and produced a full carpentry cost analysis and drawings to build completely in timber.
We then worked closely with the architect to complete the staircase design as an amendment to the drawings, we then started work on the timber staircase construction using our experienced carpentry knowledge .
Taking the original staircase design work we had to come up with a viable and cost effective solution to the problem of not using a metal staircase but using carpentry skills instead.
To over come this challenge we called on our combined carpentry experience as carpenters and joiners to build on site an a bespoke curved timber staircase.
We had to work within the architects specifications for floating stairs and would need to curve the wood steps individually as we went.
We work on the principle of measure twice and cut once. This particular build required two of our most experienced joiners to complete the staircase.
Each piece of joinery was cut by hand and finished before assembling together all whilst on site, this ensured that the staircase measurements taken for each cut was precise and any adjustments could be made.
Once the carpentry had been completed the curved timber handrail and balustrade were then installed to the staircase literally from the ground up.
During this carpentry project we had to think of the alternate method of constructing these stairs using our joinery experts .
We chose a hard wood for the risers but used pine and MDF as a cost saving alternative for the handrails and staircase strings.
By using wood it can easily be refurbished in years to come and always restored back no matter how old it is.
By removing the metal work from the new carpentry project, this has definitely helped the environment something the whole architectural, client and Atlantis team were proud of.
The complete staircase was finished in wood from start to finish, producing a result that was both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.
We did not need to use any form of metal in the joinery construction which was a massive bonus keeping the carpentry cost within budget.
It took the traditional staircase from a given to a talking feature of the property something that will last for many decades to come.
